Why you need Scrutineer

With the costs of operating and new vehicle costs spiralling, along with the costs associated with the sophisticated systems fitted to today's new vehicles, there is a constant demand to monitor overheads and identify maintenance and breakdown costs quickly and precisely.

Hope is well known for providing innovative equipment for commercial vehicles, and are specialists in the field of commercial vehicle braking. Scrutineer is a world leader in diagnosing air leaks, poor brake adjustment, faults in lighting circuits, ABS and EBS faults and problems with supply circuits. By allowing brake adjustment to be checked and reset, Scrutineer helps to achieve a better brake balance thus increasing trailer performance and making the tractor/trailer combination more fuel efficient. By using all of the above features, Scrutineer reduces roadside failures and helps pass stringent M.O.T. spot checks.

Scrutineer is a small price to pay for such a huge return in trailer productivity. Our team of experts have applied the most relevant techniques to effectively check trailers quickly and accurately. Our close collaboration with the transport industry has resulted in the Scrutineer being highly regarded for its technical excellence.

From the smallest fleet to trailer manufacturers over 50% of the fleet operators in the UK use the Hope Scrutineer.

The Advantages of Scrutineer ABS / EBS Check Facility

What Does It Do?

ABS Check

Scrutineer’s ABS check facility simulates the Tractor unit linking up with the trailer. As the trailer is connected, the Scrutineer performs a ‘Handshake’ operation with the trailer ECU.

If the test is successful, then the yellow ABS check LED should extinguish momentarily, and then light up again. If the LED does not extinguish at all, then the ‘Handshake’ test has failed indicating a problem with the ABS system.

EBS CAN Line Integrity Check

The EBS CAN Line check is complete simultaneously with the ABS check. When the ECU is powered up, it releases a stream of high speed data down the CAN lines.

Scrutineer slows down this stream in order to perform an integrity check of the signal being sent. If both data streams are satisfactory, then both Green ‘OK’ LED’s will light up.

However if there is a fault with a signal then the corresponding Red ‘Fault’ LED will illuminate.

Compact Model

The Hope Compact Scrutineer is a portable, re-chargeable 24v trailer tester designed to enable one operator to test complete trailer lighting systems using the 24N and 24S 7pin sockets and to test the ABS and EBS function via the ISO 7638 socket.

Testing made simple
- for trailer testing without a tractor unit

The Hope Compact Scrutineer is supplied with 3M leads in a robust lockable weather resistant case and weighs just 9 kgs.

The battery state is constantly monitored, an audible warning will sound to alert the operator that the unit requires re-charging and to prevent the logging of a low voltage fault with the ABS/EBS.

Energy saving relays allow maximum test time before the Hope Compact Scrutineer requires re-charging. If left unattended for longer than 5 minutes the Hope Compact.
Scrutineer will turn off automatically to save power. The anti lock circuit will remain powered for 30 minutes via the ISO 7638 to allow end of line checks.

Unique auto cycle feature allows the operator to carry out a full lighting circuit check, with
the push of one button the Hope Compact Scrutineer will automatically cycle through all
the lights.

Operating Instructions:

These instructions are only a guide to the use of the Hope Compact Scrutineer.

Trailers are often wired to the operator’s specification.

You must ensure that the Compact Scrutineer is suitable for use on each trailer before
connecting.

The Hope Compact Scrutineer has a push button cycle feature which will enable the
operator to select which circuit they wish to test. eg if the operator requires to test the
‘stop lamps’ on the trailer, simply press the 24N button until pin 4 is illuminated. This
circuit will pulse until the operator selects another circuit to test.

If left unattended for longer than 10 minutes the Hope Compact Scrutineer will turn off
automatically to save power. The anti lock circuit will remain powered for 60 minutes via
the ISO 7638.

Note After switching on, if a bleeping sound is heard the Compact Scrutineer requires
charging. (refer to page 4)

If the trailer is fitted with EBS an independent can line check is performed automatically.
This test is performed at the same time as the ABS test regardless if EBS is fitted or not.

If a fault is detected, a red led will illuminate
If no fault is present a green light will illuminate.
This check gives an indication as to whether the voltage sent via the CAN lines from the
ECU are within their correct parameters.

Charging from mains 240 volt

Turn the Compact Scrutineer off

Connect charger plug to Compact Scrutineer, then plug the charger into mains and switch
on. Depending on the current state of charge the charger light will illuminate red, yellow, or
green. Whilst charging these lights will change form red, to yellow to green indicating the
charging sequencing. When the green lamp is illuminated the batteries are fully charged.

12v Aux Charger

Connect charger plug to Compact Scrutineer and plug charger into 12 volt socket .
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CHARGE BY ANY OTHER MEANS
THE HOPE COMPACT SCRUTINEER MUST NEVER BE OPERATED WHILST THE MAINS CHARGER
OR 12-VOLT AUXILIARY CHARGER ARE CONNECTED.

Always remove charging leads before operating.
If left connected the Compact Scrutineer will only output 12 volt and damage will occur.
(If the operator inadvertently leaves either charging lead connected the low battery warning
bleep will be heard.)

The Hope Compact Scrutineer is protected by Circuit breakers, should a fault occur on the
trailer or with the equipment they will release. The circuit breakers can be reset once the
fault is remedied.

Care of your Hope Compact Scrutineer

Batteries are contained within unit and must be disposed of in the correct manner.
Do not allow water to enter the control panel when lid is open.
Keep control panel dry and clean.
